There’s nothing quite like a cake smash to celebrate your baby’s first birthday — the giggles, the mess, the messy fingers, and of course, the adorable photos you’ll treasure forever. At Jess Millar Photography, I want to make sure your session is as fun and relaxed as possible, for both your little one and for you.
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your cake smash and splash session in Folkestone or nearby Kent.
The Venue Is Sorted. Just Bring the Cake!
I book a warm, welcoming local venue (often a village hall) as part of your package — no need to worry about mess at home! All you need to bring is your baby, your chosen cake, oh, and a change of clothes.
I’ll take care of the styling, backdrop, and clean-up so you can simply enjoy the moment. If you’ve chosen a theme or colour scheme, let me know beforehand and I’ll try match the setup to suit.
Choosing the Perfect Cake
Clients provide their own cake, which makes it totally personal… but I do have a few tips:
- Keep it soft – Sponge cakes work best for smashing
- Avoid bright food colouring – It can stain little fingers and skin
- Skip hard decorations – No lollipops or wired toppers
- Think pastel or neutral – Soft pinks, pale blues, ivory or even a simple white cake look gorgeous in photos
You can go full DIY or use a local baker. Just don’t get too attached as it won’t last long!
After the Smash, it’s time for a Splash!
Once the cake has been thoroughly enjoyed, we’ll transition to a splash session – a warm bubble bath in a mini tub. It’s not only a great way to clean up, but the tub photos are some of the cutest you’ll ever see. Babies absolutely love it!
Bring a towel, and if you like, some bubble bath or toy to personalise the session.
What Should Baby Wear?
Think soft, comfortable, and timeless:
- For the smash: A simple romper, tutu, or nappy cover in neutral or soft tones
- For the splash: Nappy only or a cute swim nappy cover
- Bring a change of clothes for afterwards (and maybe one for yourself just in case!)
Avoid logos, neon colours, or anything that might distract from your little one’s big personality.
Extra Tips for a Smooth Session
- Schedule around nap time so baby is rested
- Feed a light snack before, but save the appetite for cake
- Bring wipes, a bottle or drink, and anything comforting if baby needs a break
- Try not to worry about the mess – that’s all part of the magic!
